The Rainbow Reckoning

Confronting White Privilege in LGBTQ+ Campus Communities

“Impactful. McKay makes concepts easy to understand while providing practical application. Masterful and well done.” — Jennifer, Early Reader
“A great guide for anyone looking for actionable ways to move.” — Shawna, Early Reader

In 2009, Matthew William McKay studied what happens when someone else tells your story first. In 2024, she documented what happens when a community does it: White Rainbow Weaponization, the strategic use of white racial identity to hold power inside LGBTQ+ spaces. This book turns both studies into a working manual.

Use it on your own, or hand it to participants alongside the workshops in The Rainbow Reckoning.

About the author

Matthew William McKay, PhD (she/her), is a scholar-practitioner whose research sits where LGBTQ+ identity development meets white racial identity in higher education. Her 2009 master's thesis examined how being outed affects lesbian and gay identity development and introduced the Rainbow Weights and Wings framework. Her 2024 doctoral dissertation at Indiana University named and documented White Rainbow Weaponization: the use of white racial identity to hold power and privilege inside LGBTQ+ spaces. Outed in 2001 and out as trans since 2012, she has spent her career on one question: who controls the story of an identity, and what does it cost when that control is taken? She works in learning analytics and technology, teaches as a community college adjunct, and trains and consults with colleges on racial equity in LGBTQ+ campus communities.
